Jon Ozmint Keynote Speaker at Columbia International University’s Prison Initiative Commencement

Collins & Lacy, P.C. shareholder Jon Ozmint will be the keynote speaker at Columbia International University’s (CIU) Prison Initiative Commencement on Friday, August 26, 2011. During his eight years as South Carolina Department of Corrections Director, Ozmint worked with CIU to establish and shape the program, after seeing the success of a similar program at Angola Prison in Louisiana.

With 95 percent of South Carolina inmates returning to the streets, Ozmint and Columbia International University recognized the need to equip incarcerated men with an accredited degree and faith development program; studies have shown that involvement in faith-based programs make prisons safer and reduce recidivism.

The 70-hour, two-year program, which results in an Associate of Arts degree upon completion, is privately funded and is available to inmates who meet and maintain high standards of personal conduct and can also meet the admission and academic requirements established by CIU.

“We are so pleased with the positive impact of the Prison Initiative, both for inmates’ individual lives and for South Carolina’s prison system as a whole,” said Ozmint. “The program benefits all South Carolina taxpayers by empowering inmates to live above their circumstances, as responsible and accountable citizens during and after incarceration.”

The 2011 Prison Initiative class, which included some male inmates who failed high school but later earned their GED, is graduating with a cumulative 3.77 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The graduates will return to South Carolina’s 28 prisons, trained and equipped to have a positive influence on the culture and to work under the supervision of prison chaplains and operational staff.

“Jon’s insight into the realm of public policy and his ongoing commitment to programs like the Prison Initiative strengthen our firm’s mission to help the state of South Carolina, both in business and in the community,” said managing partner Gray Culbreath.

The commencement exercises will be on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Visitation Center of Kirkland Correctional Institution, on the Broad River Road campus of South Carolina Department of Corrections.

COLUMBIA CONFERENCE CENTER GETS “GREENER”… WITH GREASE!

Building on its already successful recycling program, Columbia Conference Center will soon become even “greener” by recycling even its used kitchen oil!

CCC has enlisted the services of Coastal Biodiesel Group, a southeast-based company that has created the first “Green Grease Certification” program in the United States. Starting in August, all of CCC’s used cooking oil will be collected by Coastal Biodiesel Group for conversion into environmentally-friendly alternative fuels.

CCC’s president, Mike DuBose, said, “Part of our mission as a corporate family is to ‘create opportunities to improve lives.’ Recycling is a way to serve that mission because it not only helps the environment now, but preserves it for future generations.”

Along with Research Associates, the Evaluation Group, and DuBose Web Group, all of which are housed in its 40,000 square foot facility, CCC launched its recycling program in October 2007. In addition to its new oil recycling capabilities, CCC already recycles cardboard, plastic, and aluminum through a partnership with Sunoco Recycling.

Columbia Conference Center was built in 2003 and is located at 169 Laurelhurst Ave., Columbia, SC 29210. For more information about CCC, visit www.columbiameetings.com or call 803-772-9811. MG&C and BigHand Honored with Speech Technology Magazine’s 2011 Implementation Award

The law firm of McAngus Goudelock & Courie was recognized by Speech Technology magazine for the firm’s implementation of BigHand’s digital dictation workflow software. MG&C was one of four companies worldwide honored with the 2011 Implementation Award.

“BigHand is the only tool on the market that enables a firm to measure the productivity of legal support staff,” said Leah Beckham, MG&C’s chief operations officer, “and it has made a significant impact in how we allocate and utilize these resources in our firm.”

Speech Technology magazine gives Implementation Awards annually for product usage collaborations that illustrate the versatility of speech and achieve superior results while still cutting costs. In MG&C’s case, the firm was looking for a way to replace the analog handheld recorders that attorneys were using for dictation with a modern digital solution that would work with the firm’s existing Citrix infrastructure.

After testing several different solutions, MG&C chose the digital dictation software from BigHand, which ultimately allowed the firm to hire 24 lawyers and paralegal in 2010 without increasing support staff. The software’s reporting module has allowed the firm to track the amount of dictation and transcription each legal secretary and attorney team are doing. With this information, the firm can more strategically apply its workforce and more efficiently complete transcription projects, saving the firm a significant amount of time and money.

BigHand’s team worked with MG&C to test the software, install it across the firm’s six offices in the Carolinas, and train key personnel to be in-house experts on the software, which records dictation and then automatically sends the digital recording to a specific transcriptionist. The firm also uses BigHand’s mobile application for Blackberry, allowing attorneys to dictate and send their recordings even when they are out of the office.

Speech Technology is the leading source of news, information and analysis for the global speech technology industry. MG&C and BigHand were one of four collaborations recognized as Implementation Award winners in the magazine’s July/August 2011 issue, available online at www.speechtechmag.com

Navigating From Good to Great Foundation, Greater Lexington Chamber Announce Regional Development Manager

Bill Banning to Support Community Development and Prosperity Initiative

LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Navigating from Good to Great Foundation, a regional community development and prosperity initiative, and the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce are pleased to announce the appointment of William B. “Bill” Banning as regional development manager.

In his new role, Banning will be responsible for creating a greater awareness of the foundation’s mission and accomplishments and for accelerating efforts of regional cooperation. The position is being funded by the Navigating from Good to Great Foundation. Banning will work out of the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce under the supervision of Chamber President Randy Halfacre. Banning will focus his efforts on the Greater Lexington business community and local government.

“I look forward to working with the Navigating from Good to Great Foundation to reach our objectives and making the Midlands greater than ever for all of our citizens,” Banning said.

Intergovernmental and interregional cooperation are among the major regional issues identified by the Navigating from Good to Great Foundation.

“The timing for a position of this nature could not be better,” said Ted Speth, president of the Navigating from Good to Great Foundation. “The last 12 months have seen unprecedented progress in regional cooperation in the Midstate of South Carolina.

“Our political bodies, both local and state legislative delegations, have been successful in creating a dialogue and in acting together to accomplish certain goals that are beneficial to the region as a whole. The business community has had similar success, particularly with the formation of the MIDSTATE Chambers Coalition,” Speth said.

“This position will foster and grow this cooperative regional effort in both the private and public sectors. It will focus on business issues that are critical to the region as a whole. This position clearly falls within the core initiatives of our Foundation,” he said.

“The Lexington community is positioned for great economic prosperity. By having the Navigating from Good to Great Foundation recognize this potential and expand regional cooperation by funding this initiative in Lexington County, we will take another step in creating a vibrant Midlands community,” Halfacre said.

“With Bill Banning coming aboard, we can build better intergovernmental relationships that will lead to greater opportunities for building regional economic development capacity. Bill Banning knows and understands the inner workings of government, business, and economic development. His experience will sharpen our efforts to improve the quality of life in both Richland and Lexington counties,” Halfacre said.

A long-time business and political leader in the Midlands community, Banning recently turned over management of his insurance company to his family. Banning served on Lexington County Council from 1995 to 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. Currently he is vice chairman of the county council and chairman of its economic development committee. He also serves on the board of directors of the Central Midlands Council of Governments.

The Greater Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center

The Greater Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center strengthens and promotes economic prosperity, public policy, quality of life and workforce development in the greater Lexington community and MidState Chambers Coalition region. A nonprofit, 501 (c) 6 organization, the GLC&VC represents approximately 850 businesses and more than 30,000 employees.

First Day of School Initiative

The Columbia Chamber, in support of the City of Columbia and Mayor Benjamin, is proud to promote the First Day of School Initiative to all Midlands Businesses.

The program is designed to help students start the school year off right and encourage parent involvement in the classroom. We ask all employers to read the letter below from the Mayor and sign a commitment form to allow your employees participate in this important parent involvement initiative.

For more information and to receive a commitment form, contact Sam Johnson (803.545.3038) at the City of Columbia.

Dear Columbia Chamber members,

The first day of school is now only weeks away and, whether they are just beginning kindergarten or kicking off their senior years, students across our region are working to prepare for a new school year.

I hope you will join me in doing everything we can to make that first day a success and demonstrate to our students that education is a top priority in the Midlands Region by taking part in our First Day of School Initiative.

Last year the City of Columbia kicked off First Day by providing all City of Columbia employees with school age children, two hours to take their children to school or otherwise volunteer.  The point is to encourage them to work hard, have fun, and start a new year of learning on the right foot.

This effort was such a resounding success that this year we are expanding the program and we want you to be part of the First Day Honor Roll team.

Attached you will find my letter to employees for your information, a chart noting the start dates for districts and schools throughout Richland and Lexington Counties as well as a copy of our Honor Roll Commitment Form which explains how you and your employees can participate in this exciting initiative.

If you are interested in participating, we ask that you complete the Honor Roll Commitment Form and return it to my office no later than 5:00 PM on Wednesday, August 10th.

The first day of school is a time of promise and opportunity. Together, we can get our children off to a great start, eager to learn and feeling our support and our love.

Sincerely,

Stephen K. Benjamin

Mayor | Columbia, SC
