FAMOUSLY HOT New Year PLANNED FOR COLUMBIA’S MAIN STREET
Live Music, ESPN Zone and Fireworks Planned
Officials announced yesterday, Thursday, Nov. 3, that Columbia’s Main Street will be the setting for a New Year’s Eve celebration like the city has never seen.
According to Mayor Steve Benjamin, this will be South Carolina’s New Year’s Eve event and a truly memorable night for everyone. “We’re excited about hosting what in years to come will make South Carolina host to the largest New Year’s Eve celebration in the Southeast,” said Mayor Benjamin.
Charles Appleby, event co-chair and attorney at Collins & Lacy, P.C., led the announcements by saying, “It’s going to be big, it’s going to be exciting and it’s going to be safe.”
Sponsors, non-profit beneficiaries, elected officials, Main Street business owners and tourism officials attended the press conference held at Boyd Plaza this morning to kick off the inaugural Famously Hot New Year to be held Dec. 31, 2011.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, George Clinton, and his group the Parliament Funkadelic, will headline with regional acts, including Josh Roberts and The Hinges as well as Pinna, opening. There will be fireworks, an ESPN Zone playing the New Year’s Eve college bowl games, and a one-of-a-kind Palmetto Tree and Crescent moon display during the midnight countdown. Patrons can also visit “Resolution Row” featuring businesses and organizations that can help people achieve their New Year’s Resolutions.
Holt Chetwood, Midlands Market President of Wells Fargo, voiced his support of the event, stating, “I want to thank Mayor Benjamin for his vision and commitment to bettering Main Street and the downtown area. This investment is an opportunity for us to showcase to South Carolina all the positive things happening in downtown Columbia.”
Get excited about ringing in the New Year as this Famously Hot celebration promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience on South Carolina’s Main Street. Here are more details about the event:

• A limited number of tickets available for entry to the “The Crescent Lounge” inside 1441 Main
Street for $100 per person
• Gates open at 7:30 p.m. on December 31
• Live music and vendors starting at 8 p.m.

The event will be covered live on co-sponsor WIS News 10 television, beginning with the 11 p.m. newscast on New Year’s Eve. Santa Rings in Village at Sandhill Holiday Season with Parade!
“Salute to the Troops Holiday Parade & Santa Arrival” Rolls November 12
Village at Sandhill continues its tradition of free family friendly events by joining with the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Area Council for the “Salute to the Troops Holiday Parade and Santa Arrival”, presented by the Celebrate Freedom Foundation®. The parade to welcome Santa and honor our nation’s military and their families will kick off the holiday season at Village at Sandhill on Saturday November 12 at 8:00a.m. The parade will begin in the JC Penney parking area and continue along Town Center Place to Promenade Place in front of Belk, then through Town Center Commons and the fountain roundabout and end at “Santa’s Village” between Reeds Jewelers and Massage Envy Spa.
Military, civic, and community organizations from the area including the Columbia Fire Department as well as Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and representatives from the Richland County Sheriff’s motorcycle, horse-mounted, and K-9 patrols are scheduled to participate. The Celebrate Freedom Foundation® is scheduled to have its US Army half-track and helicopter on display. The Celebrate Freedom Foundation® is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating children, promoting lasting patriotism and honoring the military—past, present and future.
Joining Santa and serving as parade Grand Marshal is Ft. Jackson 1st Sgt. Peter J. Lara. A recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart for his service in Iraq in 2005, 1st Sgt. Lara will be representing the many local military personnel and their families who have given so much to America. In addition to the parade, other events will take place to benefit local and national outreach. They include:
- The American Red Cross will be on hand near “Santa’s Village” to conduct the “Holiday Mail for Heroes” campaign. People are invited to sign holiday greeting cards with messages of thanks and support to our nation’s military service personnel and veterans. Red Cross volunteers and Pitney Bowes will screen, sort and deliver the cards to military installations and veterans and military hospitals across the U.S. and around the world. Holiday cards for the event are being graciously donated by Kitty’s Hallmark in the Marketplace.
- Non-perishable food items will be collected in the Super Bi-Lo parking area at Village at Sandhill as we “Fill the Mayflower” in a Thanksgiving food-drive to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank. Nilson Van & Storage of Columbia will provide a “Mayflower” moving truck from 8:00a.m to Noon to collect food for needy Midland area families
- Carolina Records & Management will offer free document shredding near “Santa’s Village” from 8:00 a.m. to Noon with the donation of a new and unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots.
