RUTH MARIE EMBLER JOINS NAI AVANT’S CHARLESTON OFFICE

NAI Avant’s Charleston Office is pleased to announce that Ruth Marie Embler of Charleston, SC, will be joining the Senior Brokerage Team. Embler brings 25 years of experience in the shopping center industry from new construction development, marketing of outparcels and leasing expertise. Her experience includes working with a large variety of national retailers such as grocery stores, home improvement users and discount department retailers. She brings vast knowledge, long lasting contacts and energy to all her accounts. Ruth Marie will focus on retail development projects, retail land brokerage and investment sales throughout the Southeast. Before joining NAI Avant, Embler was employed by WRS, Inc., of Charleston, SC. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina.

Civil Justice Coalition Hires Well Known State Leader as New Chief Executive Officer

The SC Civil Justice Coalition has hired Earl Hunter, currently Commissioner of SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, as Chief Executive Officer.

Hunter recently announced his retirement as Commissioner of DHEC, a position he has held for the past ten years. Hunter also served as the agency’s government relations contact with the General Assembly for eight years prior to becoming Commissioner, Hunter worked just over 31 years with the agency.

Rick Todd, a member of the SCCJC Executive Committee, said Hunter is well known and respected by members of the General Assembly. In his previous positions, he has had to deal with a myriad of issues dealing with the public’s health, safety and welfare, many of which were controversial.

SCCJC’s primary focus is educating the business community, public and the General Assembly on issues related to the civil justice system. “Hunter is an excellent communicator, and we are confident he will be able to carry the Coalition’s issues to the legislature successfully,” said Todd.

Hunter completes his work at DHEC Feb. 1 and plans to begin work with SCCJC Feb. 3.

The SC Civil Justice Coalition which is composed of businesses, industry and trade and professional associations. The Coalition promotes common business interests including the improvement of business conditions in general and the advancement of issues affecting the business environment, the promotion of economic development and employment creation, and education of the public on legal topics, within the State of South Carolina.

The Early, Early Bird Registration rate of $99 will close on January 31st for the world-class Palmetto Open Source Software Conference, presented by IT-oLogy.

The Palmetto Open Source Software Conference will once again bring a world-class lineup of IT thought leaders to the Southeast for two days to discuss the latest issues for developers, executives, government leaders and educators.

We are extremely pleased to announce that Scott McNealy will headline POSSCON 2012. He is one of the most influential and widely quoted leaders in the history of IT. Whether co-founding Sun Microsystems at the age of 27, eventually selling Sun Microsystems to Oracle, overseeing the development of Java and the acquisition of MySQL, assuming the role of defender of the free computing world, originating the visionary phrase ‘the network is the computer,’ or starting the open source education nonprofit Curriki, McNealy has literally changed the course of technology and open source history.

POSSCON 2012 will be held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center March 28-29, 2012, and will feature track sessions, hands-on training and social and networking events. Tracks will include Education, Technical, Big Picture and Demo/Training.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: CONTEMPORARIES’ ARTIST OF THE YEAR

Columbia Museum of Art Contemporaries’ CAY Soiree and Silent Auction

support emerging artists

 The Contemporaries, a Columbia Museum of Art membership affiliate group, announces a Call for Entries for its ninth annual Contemporaries’ Artist of the Year (CAY) Soirée and Silent Auction. The event is designed to increase awareness of and support for emerging artists in South Carolina and to promote the Contemporaries’ membership. Entry is open to all South Carolina residents. Three-dimensional work must weigh less than 50 pounds and two-dimensional work must measure no more than 60 inches in either direction, including the frame. Artists can submit up to two entries. The registration deadline is Wednesday, February 29, at 5:00 p.m.

The jury will be announced in February 2012. The jury selects the artwork for the silent auction and selects one winner, the Contemporaries’ Artist of the Year, based upon the following criteria: originality of concept, technical execution, consistency, professionalism, and the degree to which the work was aesthetically interesting.

The CAY award is generously supported by Anne and Alex Postic and a matching gift from the Contemporaries. The winner receives a cash prize of $2,500.  Event guests vote on the People’s Choice award, and the winner is presented with an award and a cash prize of $300.  Jasper Magazine is sponsoring the “State-of-the-Art” award, which includes a $200 cash prize and a feature in an upcoming issue of Jasper.

All awards are presented at the CAY Soirée and Silent Auction on Friday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Columbia Museum of Art. Tickets for the CAY Soirée and Silent Auction are $30 / $15 for Contemporaries members and includes food, drinks and live entertainment.

Arts & Draughts party returns with innovation and creativity

at the Columbia Museum of Art on Friday, February 3

The wildly popular Arts & Draughts party, presented by the National Endowment for the Arts, returns to the Columbia Museum of Art for another night of creative and innovative fun on Friday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m.

Guests at this high-octane party interact with Thomas Dempster’s unique sound installation and The Half and Half’s original print puzzle, create a valentine or anti-valentine DIY art project, go on a scavenger hunt through the galleries, take a unique perspective tour of the Museum’s Collection with Free Times News, Food and Drink Editor Eva Moore and a special members only tour of the exhibition, Nature and the Grand American Vision with David Shelley, Congaree National Park Old-Growth Bottomland Forest Research and Education Center education coordinator. Guests also listen to the quirky folk-pop band Those Lavender Whales, American country singer Andy Friedman and the guitar-less garage rock band, The Get Wets while tasting the delicate and malt flavor of Czechvar beer.
