Lee Bussell, chairman and CEO of Chernoff Newman, LLC and one of the state’s leading business executives, has been named chairman of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce board of directors for 2012-2013. Bussell succeeds Mike Brenan, SC BB&T president, who is leaving the position after serving for the past two terms.
As chairman, Bussell will be responsible for leading the board of directors, a group of dedicated volunteers who set policy and the direction for the Chamber and govern Chamber operations. During his term, Bussell’s major goal is to use the Chamber as a catalyst in the community to create and expand the job market.
“Never before has the focus of the Chamber been more evident than it is today. We need to be helping small businesses get started and expand existing businesses. We need to help the University of South Carolina and other organizations commercialize research that creates new companies that create higher paying jobs. We need to create an environment that creates jobs that keeps our young ‘rock star’ talent in Columbia. We need to create the infrastructure to attract development,” Bussell said.
Bussell has been chairman and CEO of Chernoff Newman since its founding in 2003, the result of a merger between Newman Saylor & Gregory and Chernoff Silver. A graduate of the University of South Carolina’s School of Journalism, he is recognized nationally for his expertise in corporate communications, issue management and marketing of high growth technology start-ups. He has remained active with the university, serving for two years as the alumni association president as well as two years on the board of trustees.
Bussell has always been very active in Columbia’s and the state’s business communities, recently completing a term as chairman of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the South Carolina Business Alliance for Transportation. He has served on several advisory boards and committees including six terms on the executive committee for the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, chairman for the partnership board of the University of South Carolina’s College of Mass Communications and the board of the Navigating from Good to Great Foundation.
“We are excited to welcome Lee Bussell as the chairman for the upcoming term,” said Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ike McLeese. “With his past experience at the SC Chamber of Commerce as well as his active participation and exemplary leadership in the business community, we are certain that he will bring great insight to this position. This is sure to be an exciting year for the Chamber and for the Greater Columbia Region.”
