The Carolina Panorama Newspaper will host a banquet to pay tribute to African-American business owners that have served the Columbia community for at least 40 years. Several of the honorees are members of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce.
“A Tribute to the Legacy of Black Businesses” banquet will take place at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 5:30 pm. The event is in concert with Carolina Panorama founder Nathaniel Abraham, Sr. celebrating 50 years in the newspaper industry.
In 1963, Nathaniel Abraham, Sr. moved to Columbia, SC and launched his career in the newspaper industry. He played a pivotal role in several publications across the state, using his publications as platforms for highlighting community events and to provide support and promotion to black business owners. As this year marks the 50th Anniversary of Mr. Abraham’s involvement in the news media, Nathaniel Abraham, Jr., the current Editor in Chief of the Carolina Panorama Newspaper, will honor him and other black businesses with an evening of celebration.
“It is important that we acknowledge our business pioneers and inspire the next generation of business owners,” said Abraham Jr. “Without a strong business community, the Black community will not grow. In order for us to succeed as a people, we have to have successful business owners who can inspire and teach the next generation, as well as pass on wealth for the next generation to build upon.
“We will be honoring local businesses that are doing that,” he concluded, “some for as many as five generations.”
