The Sandhill Horror II Creeps Into Village

SandhillHorrorIIIn an effort to provide a unique, safe, and fun Village at Sandhill Halloween event, “The Sandhill Horror II” comes to the center on Saturday October 26 from 5:00pm-8:00pm in Town Center Common.

Designed to appeal to all ages, “The Sandhill Horror II” & Safe Trick-or-Treat features a diverse lineup of performers. The Columbia Marionette Theater performs its show entitled “Circus Adventure” at 5pm. The Magic of John Tudor will be presented at 6:00pm and finally, Soda City Cirque an avant garde troupe of performers offering everything from juggling to stilt walking will headline the evening with a 7pm performance.

In addition to the free entertainment in Town Center Common, kids will be treated to free face painting along with free candy courtesy of the Wildhorses Mustang Club with its “trunk-or-treat” event, as well as hayrides for a nominal fee. Merchants are also encouraged to give away candy center-wide for safe trick-or-treating from 5:00pm-8:00pm.

Contract Construction Announces Election of New President

The Board of Directors of Contract Construction, Inc. announce the election of Greg Hughes as President.  Hughes, a catalyst in the company’s growth for the last 16 years, has managed many of the company’s high-profile projects including the Arnold School of Public Health, Shandon Baptist Church Sanctuary, USC Baseball Stadium, and renovations of the Township Auditorium.

Contract Construction, Inc. was co-founded in 1984 by current CEO John Farley.  The company has evolved from performing minor residential renovations to becoming a major force in the commercial and public sector construction markets throughout the state.  “We have built a reputation in an extremely competitive environment by putting the needs of the owner first and by knowing that fairness, integrity, and quality will be justly rewarded in time,” said Farley.  “Greg exemplifies these ideals and seizes the opportunities before him.  His dedication to every task, commitment to every project, and service to every client sets a higher standard for our company.”

Hughes, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, was appointed by Mick Zais to the School Facilities Committee in 2011 (3-year term) and served as Chairman of the Design and Construction Manual Revision Sub-Committee.  He serves on an eight-member panel with the State Engineer to review procurement and performance of the Special Inspection Agencies that oversee public facilities construction, and is past President of the Building Division of Carolinas AGC.  Hughes resides in Columbia with his wife, Stefanie and their children, Kate, 11, and Davis, 6.


McAngus Goudelock & Courie Ranked 8th Among South Carolina’s Best Places to Work

Best Places to Work 2013McAngus Goudelock and Courie has been ranked #8 in the Large Employer Category in South Carolina as one of the Best Places to Work by SCBiz, in partnership with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and Best Companies Group.

This survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best employers in the state of South Carolina, benefitting the state’s economy, workforce and businesses. The list is made up of 40 companies.

“We are happy once again to be recognized as one of South Carolina’s Best Places to Work,” said Jay Courie, MG&C’s Managing Member. “It is a true credit to our people and the MGC culture they have created over the last 18 years.”

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity
  • Be a publicly or privately held business
  • Have a facility in the state of South Carolina
  • Have a minimum of 15 employees working in the state of South Carolina
  • Be in business a minimum of one year

Companies from across the state entered the two-part survey process to determine the Best Places to Work in South Carolina. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems, and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process, analyzed the data, and determined the final rankings.

The ranked companies were recognized at a special awards ceremony, presented by Jackson Lewis LLP, in October 2013 and the rankings will be published in the December 2013 issue of SCBiz.

GrubbsE. David Grubbs, Managing Principal and Broker-in-Charge of NAI Avant’s Charleston office, recently brokered the land sale of ±0.70 acres at 1400 Stuart Engals Blvd., Mount Pleasant, SC. Grubbs represented the buyer in the transaction valued at $248,000. Jack Owens, with Lee & Associates – Charleston, represented the seller. The site is to be the future location of East Cooper Smiles General and Aesthetic Dentistry.


Ruth Marie Embler, Senior Broker with NAI Avant’s Charleston office, recently represented the landlord, GS Midtown Apartments, LLP, in the lease of retail space at the Elan Midtown project located at 441 Meeting Street in Charleston, SC.
